There are no prerequisites for participation in A1.1.

The prerequisites for A1.2 are

  • successful completion of A1.1 at 911±¬ÁÏÍø Bergakademie Freiberg,
  • a certificate of level A1.1 from a recognized language institute (eg. Goethe, telc, ÖSD; usually not older than 2 years), another university in Germany, or a partner university/institution of 911±¬ÁÏÍøBAF
Examination/Credits:     

4 credit points and a certificate upon successful completion
Each module ends with a written examination (90 minutes). 
At least 80% active participation in the courses is required for admission to the exam.
Course fee:

 

For students and doctoral candidates enrolled at 911±¬ÁÏÍøBAF - free of charge.
For employees and guests - 290 € / semester

Course content:          
Participants acquire basic knowledge and basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing for communication in everyday life as well as knowledge of the country. Fundamentals in phonetics, spelling, grammar and lexis are taught.

In the following cases, you have the opportunity to qualify for the A1.2 course by taking a placement test. We are offering various in-person test dates between 31 March and 8 April. You will receive an invitation from us to register for a test date. Participation in a placement test without invitation and prior registration will not be possible.

  • You took the A1.1 exam at 911±¬ÁÏÍøBAF but did not pass.
  • You completed the preliminary exam requirements for the A1.1 course at 911±¬ÁÏÍøBAF but decided not to take the exam (in this case, you will only be given the opportunity to take the placement test once!).
  • You had to drop out of an A1.1 course at 911±¬ÁÏÍøBAF in the second half of the course, but you have a certificate of attendance. (In this case, the placement test can only be taken once!).
  • You can present a certificate from a language institution that we do not recognize.
  • Your certificate is more than 2 years old.
  • You can provide proof of participation in an A1.1 course at another language institution.

If there is no proof of existing language skills at A1.1 level, you will not be able to start the course in the summer semester. You can then register for an A1.1 course in the winter semester 2026/27 in October. 
A competence-based upgrade is at the discretion of the IUZ/Department of Languages and is only possible upon the recommendation of the teacher and only in the first two weeks of the course.

You will receive your invitation to the course via the OPAL learning platform by 10 April. If you do not attend the first class without giving a reason, your place in the course will be reallocated.

Participants become familiar with essential linguistic features and typical structures of oral and written texts. They acquire strategies to adequately cope linguistically with the written and oral communicative situations associated with their studies/doctoral studies or everyday professional life. They are able to present and present content specific to text type and context, as well as to argue their own point of view in different situations.
